The NAMI organization operates at the local, state and national levels. Each level of the organization provides support, education, information, and advocacy. Individual membership and the extraordinary work of hundreds of thousands of volunteer leaders is the lifeblood of NAMI’s local affiliates and state organizations. Mental Health America

MHA’s programs help it to fulfill its mission of “promoting mental health, preventing mental disorders and achieving victory over mental illness through advocacy, education, research and services.” The goals are to educate the public, encourage reform and promote the use of effective local and regional prevention and recovery programs. Examples of campaigns are the Children’s Mental Health Matters Campaign or Childhood Depression Awareness Day.

Aware-Helping to Defeat Depression

Aware is a voluntary organization formed in 1985 by a group of interested patients, relatives and mental health professionals, whose aims are to assist that section of the population who are directly affected by depression. Advocacy activities include different runs, marathons, or cycles.

American Foundations for Suicide Foundation

The AFSP is the leading national not-for-profit organization exclusively dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide through research, education and advocacy, and to reaching out to people with mental disorders and those impacted by suicide. An upcoming activity is called the “The Out of the Darkness Overnight” and it’s an 18-mile journey through the night, from dusk until dawn. It’s a unique opportunity to bring the issues of depression and suicide into the light as we walk together to turn heartbreak into hope for tomorrow.

Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance

DBSA raises funds through special events, which also help raise awareness about depression and bipolar disorder. An upcoming even is the 4th Annual Rebecca’s Dream Gala. This event, a celebration of dreams and awareness, raises funds that support the shared missions of the Rebecca Lynn Cutler Legacy of Life Foundation and DBSA to “promote awareness and compassionate understanding of depression and bipolar disorder as real diseases.”
